The Tigers are widely considered one of the best teams heading into next season. However, not many are willing to put them at No. 1. Josh Pate of The Josh Pate’s College Football Show is not one of those people.
Today, the college football analyst for 247Sports published his top 20 post-spring rankings, with Clemson listed as No. 1. In the comments on X (formerly Twitter), a fan asked Pate how he could put the Tigers at No. 1. Pate responded, “Well because they return QB/OC/DC/HC combo, have their best WR room in years, and feature NFL talent at every level of the defense.”
Pate points out the biggest advantage Clemson has over anyone in the country: retention. In a day and age where the transfer portal reigns supreme over college football, it’s almost overwhelming the weapons Clemson returns in 2025. And for what it’s worth, despite all the mocking and finger-pointing, Dabo Swinney’s approach to the transfer portal is one of the reasons the Tigers return the most production in college football from the 2024 season.
With that being said, there are some oddities in Pate’s rankings. He has Alabama and LSU in the top 5, with Florida and Oklahoma coming in at No. 9 and No. 10, respectively. While reigning national champs Ohio State is No. 8. Georgia doesn’t even make the top 10, missing it by one spot at No. 11.
