Jackson Cantwell Commitment: Miami Hurricanes football lands top recruit
Nixa High School’s Jackson Cantwell picked Miami (Florida) as his college destination during a ceremony on Tuesday afternoon in Nixa.
NIXA — Before Jackson Cantwell walked onto the stage to share his long-awaited college commitment with the world, he decided to give Miami Hurricanes football coach Mario Cristobal a quick call.
The nation’s No. 1 recruit said the phone call lasted about five seconds. He told the offensive line guru that he might want to watch the live stream of his announcement.
Video surfaced of Cristobal throwing his arms up and roaring in a Ritz-Carlton hallway in Amelia Island, where the ACC spring meetings are being held. He knew he was moments away from landing the biggest recruit of his Hurricanes tenure.
Moments later, Cantwell sat on a stage and grabbed a Miami hat. He put it on before removing his jacket, revealing a Hurricanes shirt underneath. He threw up the iconic “U” hand gesture, marking the conclusion to the most publicized recruitment in Springfield area’s history.
He chose the Hurricanes over Georgia, Ohio State and Oregon. In the end, his relationships with Cristobal and offensive line coach Alex Mirabal prevailed. He decided in his head on the plane ride home from a visit to the University of Georgia this past weekend.
“On the plane ride back to Springfield, I thought about the decision as a whole, and I knew where I was going to go,” Cantwell said. “As soon as I got off, I told my parents that this was it.”
