Why Kirby Smart wanted Josh McCray and Elo Modozie on Georgia football

Georgia football added some experience to its running back room with the addition of Illinois transfer Josh McCray.

Coach Kirby Smart called the 6-foot-1, 235-pound McCray “a talented kid from a great high school program,” and said he sees him helping out the running game particularly when the Bulldogs need to move the chains.

Smart was speaking on Wednesday morning on May 14 at the celebrity pro-am at the Regions Tradition Champions Club at Greystone Golf & Country Club in Hoover, Ala.

McCray hails from Enterprise High in the southeastern part of the state.

“In a world of a lot of third-and-ones and fourth-and-ones in college football with analytics people going for it, you need short yardage backs,” Smart said. “We think he gives us potential to do that.”

Georgia ranked 78th nationally in third down conversions last season at 39.2 percent.

McCray rushed for 609 yards and 10 touchdowns on 117 carries last season as a redshirt junior while making 13 catches for 116 yards and a touchdown.

McCray is one of 10 transfer portal additions since last season for Georgia and four who have committed to Georgia since the end of spring practice.

The other three: Army outside linebacker Elo Modozie, Miami defensive lineman Josh Horton and UCF offensive lineman Waltclaire Flynn Jr.

Smart was asked what attracted Georgia to Modozie, a 6-foot-3, 245-pounder who had 6 ½ sacks, 8 tackles for loss and 34 tackles last season as a sophomore.

“A really good athlete,” he said. “A position of need, outside linebacker. Great kid., high character. Great family. So we’re excited to have him.”
