Texas A&M paid over $27 million in severance payments during 2024 FY

Former Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher departed the program just weeks before the conclusion of the 2023 college football season, as he was fired hours after the Aggies’ blowout home win over Mississippi State. Fisher’s six-year career in College Station was above average at best, finishing with a 45-25 overall record, including 27-21 in SEC play and four bowl game appearances, including the 2020 Orange Bowl victory over North Carolina.

Fisher’s time with the Aggies ran thin during his final two seasons, as his failure to capitalize on the program’s recruiting success, especially after securing the “historic” 2022 recruiting class, resulted in a 5-7 finish during the 2022 season, which is still discussed today.

Still, nothing compares to Fisher’s enormous contract that former Texas A&M Athletic Director Ross Bjork and the A&M Board of Regents handed to him on a silver platter after the 9-1 2020 season, granting him a 10-year deal with an annual $9 million salary.

This has since come back to haunt the program, as his firing on Nov. 23, 2023, resulted in Texas A&M buying him out for a record $77.5 million, which still stands as the largest buyout in college football history. However, in today’s market, this will likely change in the future.

As I said, Texas A&M will continue to pay Fisher $7.2 annually until 2031, and according to the latest SEC severance pay update for all 16 conference programs, and unsurprisingly, the Aggies led by an astronomical amount, paying a whopping $27,507,057 million in 2024. Here are the complete payments for every conference member except for Vanderbilt due to its standing as a private institution:
