Two-Minute Drill: Panthers look to move on; FHSAA baseball, softball finals
The Florida Panthers and Toronto Maple Leafs each won both of their home games through four games of their second round NHL playoffs.
LAKELAND — Brett Smith is no stranger to Victory Christian. In fact, Smith graduated from Victory Christian and has been the head coach there the past three seasons. He now is the new head football coach at Victory Christian, replacing Kendrick Stewart, who resigned last month.
Confused?
Smith comes to Lakeland’s Victory Christian from Tulsa, Oklahama’s Victory Christian — the Conquerors — where he also attended high school in the early 2000s. Yet despite the distance, Smith really is no stranger the Lakeland school as a relationship started between Stewart and him nearly two years ago.
While on a missionary trip to Orlando, Victory’s Dream Center director Mike Cooper saw Smith wearing a blue Victory Christian shirt (The Storm’s colors are red and white).
Cooper introduced Smith to Stewart, and the two coaches talked for nearly three hours.
“I was supposed to be doing missions work, but we ended up chopping it up and we’re talking culture and ball, and we hit it off so well that we had talked about like what would this look like if (I) ever came on staff and so prior to becoming the head coach,” Smith said. “Coach and I had actually already talked about bringing me on staff here. This was about a year and a half, two years ago.”
The coaches stayed in touch and when Stewart contacted Smith just prior to resigning to inform him of his intentions…
