Michigan’s offense must step up to match elite 2025 defense

Despite losing some high-end players on defense, Michigan football is poised to have a stellar unit on that side of the ball, yet again, this upcoming season. Thus, the chances of success hinge heavily on the offense taking a step forward this year.

The Wolverines play a brand of complementary football that requires all three units — offense, defense, and special teams — to do their part. Once Michigan gets a lead, given the defensive prowess, it becomes that much more difficult for other teams to get back into the game, especially if the offense can sustain drives to keep the defense fresh, while the special teams unit pins the other team back deep.

In 2024, all three units had their difficulties, but the defense finished in the top 10, while the others struggled. Thus, when ESPN put together its early 2025 quarterback tiers, it stands to reason that the Wolverines will need some success on that front if they’re to get back atop the college football mountain.

The ‘worldwide leader’ has the Wolverines quarterback situation with Bryce Underwood and Mikey Keene in Tier 4, ‘the young pups,’ which also features Ohio State with Julian Sayin and Lincoln Kienholz, Notre Dame with CJ Carr (Lloyd Carr’s grandson) and Kenny Minchey, and Washington with Demond Williams Jr. and Kai Horton.
