Mandarin High School senior Brian Harris, ranked No. 62 on the USA TODAY Florida Network top 100, will announce his college football decision Friday.Harris, a defensive lineman, has narrowed his choices to Alabama, Michigan, Oklahoma, Penn State, and South Carolina.A former soccer player, Harris didn’t start playing football until eighth grade.
Editor’s note: Mandarin rising senior Brian Harris wrote the following first-person story to preview his college decision. The 6-foot-4 290-pound Harris is ranked No. 62 on the USA TODAY Florida Network top 100 and the No. 7 defensive lineman in the state. He recorded 29 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks and two forced fumbles in 2024. Harris will announce his decision at 3 p.m. on Friday.
My mom told me this was going to happen.
I remember just having a sit-down conversation with my mother in my kitchen a couple years ago and trying to explain college football to her. I said, “These are the biggest conferences, the SEC and the Big Ten. These are the biggest schools, Alabama, Penn State and Michigan. And I wanted to play at the biggest schools.”
I was just naming those schools. I never thought I would get offers from them. My mom said, “They’re going to all come.” I’m looking at her crazy. She doesn’t know what she’s talking about, but she had faith. I said, “Mom, you don’t know what Alabama is. You don’t know the history.” She said, “You’re going to get it.”
