Calvin University breaks ground on new football stadium

GRAND RAPIDS – Giant cranes and bulldozers were buzzing around a busy construction site just before Trent Figg stepped up to the microphone.

The Calvin University football coach and other dignitaries were on hand for the official ground-breaking ceremony for the new football field on Thursday afternoon.

“When we started Calvin football, we took a giant leap of faith as an institution and as a football program,” Figg said. “Today is the next step in our mission for Calvin football.”

The stadium will be built in two phases. Phase one will be the construction of the turf playing field, lights and scoreboard. Phase two will be the stands on both sides of the field and a press box. 

Until the entire plan is completed, the Knights will play their home games at Zuidema Field, the school’s new soccer stadium.

“Today marks a big milestone for Calvin University and Calvin athletics,” Calvin President Greg Elzinga said. “It was just over a year ago that we launched our football program. It was a meaningful beginning, but we knew all along that our dreams and aspirations were something bigger: To bring football to our campus.”

The Calvin football team was 2-8 in its inaugural season. On Nov. 9 2024, Hope College beat the Knights 38-7. The two teams will match up again this fall on Nov. 8 in Holland.

“Two-and-a-half years ago, when I was introduced as the Calvin football coach, I think I had one shirt that said ‘Calvin football’ on it,” Figg recalled. “We didn’t have helmets, we didn’t have shoulder pads, we didn’t have a single player. And in 2 1/2 years, we’re going to have 120 football players.”
