HASLETT — Kory Amachree could have stayed close to home and followed in the footsteps of his father Opuene as a running back at Michigan State.

But the Haslett junior standout is determined to walk his own path.

And that path will lead him to Kansas University.

Amachree, who is rated a four-star prospect on 247Sports composite rankings and is the state No. 6 player in the 2026 class, revealed his decision during a ceremony in the Haslett High School gym on May 23.

Amachree chose Kansas over his other finalists, which included Michigan State, Indiana, Pittsburgh, Duke and Harvard.

“It’s been crazy. I still remember the first day I committed and coach (Jonathan) Wallace — his reaction and coach (Lance) Leipold’s reaction,” Amachree said. “It still warms my heart to this day so I know I made the right decision for myself. Obviously I’m happy that everybody is happy for me, but for the people that aren’t, I hope they understand that I had to make this decision for myself. I felt it was the best thing for me and my future.”

Kansas was one of the first major college offers for Amachree and also was one of the first schools to reach out to him after his 2024 season had an early ending when he suffered a broken leg. That was among that things that had strong appeal for Amachree as he weighed his options.

“When you know, you know,” Amachree said. “I think when I went to Kansas on my official visit and my unofficial visit, I just kind of knew. It just felt like home. I talked to coach (Matt Gildersleeve), the strength coach and he was a big part in why I committed as well. I felt like I can grow and develop there the best.”
