The second UCF offseason mailbag features questions on Scott Frost’s contract, a disappointing Year 2 in the Big 12 and Memorial Day munchies.
What are your thoughts on (UCF) Athletics, including the bowl game = additional year clause on Scott’s contract? Wasn’t the advantage of hiring Frost that he was to be relatively “cheap” as an unwanted commodity? — @BrianWPeterson.
Athletic directors have a long history of working with clauses in coaches’ contracts, but this is the first time I’ve seen such clauses at UCF. This clause was included to reward Frost if he led the Knights to a bowl game in his first season. It’s akin to betting on oneself, so to speak. If UCF becomes bowl-eligible in Year 1 — which is certainly possible — he will receive an additional year on his contract and an extra $5.25 million. If not, then the school isn’t out any money, although it’s safe to say that if Frost has a successful tenure, he’ll receive a contract extension at some point.
The problem that can occur is if UCF does qualify for a bowl game this season and then struggles anytime over the next four seasons, the school would be on the hook for the sixth year when it comes to the buyout, which, according to the contract, is 75% of the guaranteed compensation.
It’s a risk, considering Frost has posted one winning season in seven seasons as a head coach, but it provides long-term stability for a program that has had four coaches over the last nine seasons. It’s safe to say that if Frost doesn’t find success, it could be costly for the department.
