Death. Taxes. Significant changes to college football.
National news:
Numerous media members took to social media to report college football’s move toward “straight seed,” which tweaks the College Football Playoff format. This means the top four teams in the final ranking following the conference championship games will be seeded 1-4. This is a change from last season, when the top four seeds were reserved for the four highest-ranked conference champions.
Last season, byes were awarded to Oregon, Georgia, Arizona State, and Boise State. Duck fans were upset, feeling that their squad had drawn the short end of the stick after an undefeated journey up to that point. In fairness, they had a point. Oregon met eventual national champion Ohio State in the second round and got hammered, then Ohio State battled Texas before moving onto the national championship game and downing Notre Dame.
“Straight seeding” should create more balanced paths to the title, as legit contenders will no longer hide in the shadows of conference champions.
Next up? Possibly an expanded playoff.
While CFP decided on a move to “straight seeding,” it has not adopted a format for 2026 & beyond.
Big Ten & SEC – which control future format – are supporting a 16-team playoff that grants each twice as many AQs (4) as ACC & Big 12 (2).
