UCF football position preview: Running back

The second in an occasional position-by-position preview of the UCF football team heading into the offseason:

TODAY: RUNNING BACK

What to expect

Replacing a generational talent like RJ Harvey is a significant challenge, but the Knights don’t necessarily require one player to take on that role. Instead, it’s more realistic that they will adopt a running back-by-committee approach this season. It’s a similar approach Coach Scott Frost used during his previous time at UCF and Nebraska.

Transfer Jaden Nixon started nine games at Western Michigan but still shared the workload with two other running backs, while Myles Montgomery was the primary backup to Harvey, taking part in just 10% of the carries last season. It’s safe to assume that both will share the majority of the workload in 2025.

Stacy Gage and walk-on Tyler Wrenn didn’t see action last season but have shown tremendous upside during spring camp, as did freshman Agyeman Addae. Freshman Taevion Swint was limited in the spring but is expected to be healthy when fall camp begins. With a small group, all four should see playing time in the backfield and the return game.

What they’re saying

“We have to believe from the first guy to the second guy to the third guy that that guy can be a guy in the program that’s going to make a play because I’ll tell my guys to go hard every single play and they need to have that trust that their brother is going to be able to come in the next play and do whatever he has to do and we determine not to fail.” — UCF running backs coach Jimmy Beal.
