2025 Opponent Snapshot: Rutgers Scarlet Knights

Quick 2024 Recap

There was buzz around Rutgers heading into 2024, thanks to an experienced roster and a friendly conference slate that did not include Ohio State, Oregon, Michigan and Penn State. Things started out promising with a 4-0 start that included victories over Virginia Tech and Washington. However, a four-game losing streak shattered any hopes of a surprise run at a Big Ten title. The Scarlet Knights were able to rebound by winning three of their last four to finish 7-5, with the only loss against a ranked Illinois squad. Rutgers accepted an invitation to the Rate Bowl, losing a 44-41 shootout to Kansas State on the day after Christmas.

Offensive Plater to Watch: RB CJ Campbell

Rutgers has a history of producing talented running backs, and Campbell seems to be next in line. The Florida Atlantic transfer is a big-play threat who is also dangerous out of the backfield. Campbell finished the 2024 season with 1,310 yards from scrimage with 14 touchdowns. He also did not fumble once despite his 205 touches. Campbell finished the season strong, with 150 rushing yards against Charlotte and 218 yards from scrimmage in the season finale againt Tulsa.

Defensive Player to Watch: DE Eric O’Neil

Indiana’s surprise playoff apperance in 2024 was aided by several impactful transfers from James Madison. Now the Scarlet Knights are looking to copy that formula by adding multiple Dukes from the transfer portal, including the wildly productive O’Neil. After starting his career at Long Island University, O’Neil made a huge splash in his first and only season at James Madison, racking up 18.5 TFLs and 13 sacks, good for fifth in the nation. Rutgers defense did not play up to expectations last fall, and O’Neil can provide a major boost if he proves ready for Big Ten play.
