2025 Penn State Football: Alex Birchmeier player profile

Going into the 2025 football season, Nittany Lions Wire will examine each player listed on the Penn State roster. Over the preseason, each profile will cover the player’s background, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for James Franklin this season.

Offensive lineman Alex Birchmeier was a highly touted recruit two cycles ago, drawing comparisons to Indianapolis Colts guard Quenton Nelson and earning buzz as a potential first-round draft prospect. Through two seasons in Happy Valley, he’s seen minimal action, including a redshirt in 2023 and special teams role in 2024. If Birchmeier is going to live up to his lofty recruiting expectations, 2025 serves as an opportunity to break out.

Recruiting Rankings

Class of 2023: Consensus 4-star recruit, No. 3 interior offensive lineman per 247Sports

Birchmeier was one of the top recruits in the Nittany Lions’ 2023 class, picking Penn State over offers from Georgia, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon and many more.

Depth Chart Overview

Birchmeier hasn’t had many opportunities to display the traits that made him a coveted recruit, but with Sal Wormley off to the NFL and JB Nelson transferring to Kansas State, Penn State’s depth at guard has taken a hit. Vega Ioane and Cooper Cousins are favorites to start, but Birchmeier may be able to work his way into the two-deep and see meaningful reps this season.
