Anonymous Big Ten coach tabs Ducks as title threats

Ever since Dan Lanning arrived in Eugene back in 2021, the Oregon Ducks have been consistent winners, steadily improving year over year. With a 35-6 record, one Big Ten Championship, a 2-1 bowl record, three straight top-10 recruiting classes, and back-to-back top-5 classes, it’s clear that Lanning is highly capable of coaching and recruiting at a high level.

While he is still yet to win the national championship, there are expectations that it’s a matter of “when” Lanning can bring that trophy home to Eugene, not “if.” In an interview with Athlon Sports Magazine, an anonymous Big Ten coach echoed that sentiment, having this to say about Lanning and what he’s done at Oregon thus far.

“The only thing missing for [Dan] Lanning is the hardware,” the coach said. “Up until the Rose Bowl, the big games he lost were situational decisions where you still respected his confidence for making risky calls. They’re in the mix to win it all.”

2025 will be a huge year for Lanning as he looks to prove what his system can produce. After utilizing transfer portal quarterbacks for the first three years in Eugene, Oregon will now deploy a “home-grown” passer in either Dante Moore or Austin Novosad, allowing them to take over an offense that is ripe with young but unproven talent. On the defensive side of the ball, that theme of unproven youth remains, but those highly-rated recruiting classes have built a bed of talent that has left many confident in Oregon’s ability to compete.

After seeing what Lanning built on defense at Georgia, many Duck fans are excited to see what this next generation of Duck football might bring. Apparently, other coaches in the Big Ten are preparing for it to be pretty successful.
