Baker Mayfield has carved out a special place in the hearts of Tampa Bay Buccaneers fans after the last two seasons. Before he earned that, he carved out a special spot with the Oklahoma Sooners.
That spot in Norman, Oklahoma, is well documented, as Mayfield now has a statue of his likeness outside the stadium. He also set several school records and won a Heisman Trophy while leading the team to a College Football Playoff appearance in his final year.
Bruce Feldman of The Athletic recently highlighted his extraordinary career in Norman when he ranked the best college football players of the 2000s.
Mayfield came in ranked at 14th on the list, 7th best quarterback behind Cam Newton, Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson, Vince Young, Tim Tebow, and Andrew Luck.
Feldman writes of Mayfield, saying, “Mayfield won the starting job as a walk-on freshman at Texas Tech in 2013 before transferring to Oklahoma, where he also initially walked on. He flourished in Lincoln Riley’s system, leading the Sooners to three Big 12 titles and two Playoff bids and finishing in the top four of the Heisman race three years in a row, including winning the award in 2017.”
Mayfield has shown he can play with a chip on his shoulder and be consistent while dealing with a variety of outside noise. Bucs fans hope he can use the last two years early playoff exits as mental ammo to revamp himself ahead of a dominant 2025 season.
