Ohio State proposed moving its highly anticipated football season opener against Texas to later over the Labor Day weekend, according to a FOX Sports executive.
Mike Mulvihill, the president for insights and analytics, told Front Office Sports that Ohio State athletic director Ross Bjork raised the idea of pushing back the nonconference game from Aug. 30, a Saturday, to the following day.
The move to Sunday would allow FOX to air the game in prime time rather than at midday. The network, which is airing the marquee matchup, is expected to assign it to a noon kickoff, though it has not announced a game time.
Bjork did not respond to message requests from The Dispatch. It was reported that Texas nixed the potential date change.
The frequency of noon games has been a point of frustration among a portion of the Buckeyes’ fan base in recent years as FOX has prioritized its “Big Noon Saturday” telecast. Six of Ohio State’s eight home games during the regular season last season were at noon.
The Buckeyes’ win over Tennessee in the first round of the College Football Playoff last December was its first prime-time game against a ranked opponent at Ohio Stadium since 2022.
This year’s game between Ohio State and Texas is the first meeting between the blue bloods on either campus since their last home-and-home series two decades ago.
They met in the playoff last season, resulting in a win by the Buckeyes that propelled them into the national championship game.
