No. 1 TE Mark Bowman commits to USC over Georgia, Texas, others

One of the top prospects in the country is now committed to a hometown school with Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei tight end pledging to the USC Trojans on Friday.

The 6’4.5, 225-pounder ended his recruitment in favor of head coach Lincoln Riley’s program over the Georgia Bulldogs, Ole Miss Rebels, Oregon Ducks, and the Texas Longhorns.

The timing from Bowman, a consensus five-star prospect ranked as the nation’s top tight end and No. 16 overall prospect, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings, comes after an official visit to Oxford earlier this month and prior to official visits scheduled to his other four finalists in June, including Texas.

So the next critical development in Bowman’s recruitment is whether he shuts it down completely and cancels those visits, which Riley and his staff would surely prefer, or indicates some continued openness by taking them after all.

Whatever happens in the short term, expect Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian and tight ends coach Jeff Banks to continue pushing for Bowman with months to make inroads before Early Signing Day in December, particularly considering that Texas doesn’t get serious about making NIL offers until late in the process.
