Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark reaffirmed that his league favors a 5+11 model for any future version of the College Football Playoff, stating it is fair and rewards performance.
Yormark’s remarks are just the latest in an ongoing debate among Power 4 commissioners over the future of football’s postseason. It’s an issue that’s created a clear divide between the heavyweights of the SEC and Big Ten and those in the Big 12 and ACC.
The point of contention centers on how to restructure the current 12-team playoff model when the current contract expires at the end of this season.
The SEC and Big Ten are advocating for a 16-team model centered on a 4-4-2-2-1 format, which would provide four automatic qualifying bids to both leagues. The Big 12 and ACC would receive two AQ bids each, and an AQ bid would be awarded to the highest-ranked Group of Six team. The remaining three spots would be at-large bids.
The Big 12 and ACC, meanwhile, are in favor of the 5+11 format, which provides AQ bids for the five conference champions and 11 at-large bids.

“We’re pushing [the] 5+11 [model]. We have all week,” Yormark said after the final day of the conference’s spring meetings in Orlando.
Traction for the 4-4-2-2-1 model is slipping, with some SEC football coaches voicing support for a possible move to a 5+11 format.
“I was also glad to hear that the SEC coaches supported the format, which is critically important,” Yormark said. “We look forward to continued dialogue with them, but I feel there’s real momentum for 5+11 certainly; the public is voting yes for it, which is critically important and a very good sign.
