With summer approaching quickly, it is time to start previewing the 2025 Rutgers football season. The Scarlet Knights have an improved roster with a humming offense, both in the pass and run game, return Athan Kaliakmanis at quarterback, and have made portal additions on both sides of the ball. The defense has added standout edge rushers in Eric O’Neill and Bradley Weaver, with transfers Jett Elad and Cam Miller being some of the biggest additions bolstering the secondary. Meanwhile, the offense has added several pieces, including C.J. Campbell at running back and D.T. Sheffield at receiver. At running back, Antwan Raymond looks poised to carry the mantle at the position, while Ja’Shon Benjamin and Sam Brown V round out a solid stable of backs. The offensive line has added significant depth, and special teams is always a strong point, retaining kicker Jai Patel and punter Jakob Anderson, while also boasting great kick and punt teams that can change the game at any point.
However, the schedule is significantly more difficult than last season. Rutgers will have to face off against the likes of Ohio State, Penn State, and Oregon, three of the conference’s top teams, as well as tough opponents in Iowa and Illinois. Road games against Minnesota and Washington will not be easy, as each program looks for revenge after Rutgers defeated both in contested affairs at home. The other Big Ten opponents include Purdue and Maryland, while the nonconference brings out the best two MAC teams from last season and an FCS opponent in Norfolk State. Rutgers will need to once again capitalize on the nonconference slate and find wins in the Big Ten portion of the schedule to make a bowl game this season.
