Deion Sanders is entering his third season leading the Colorado football program after leading the team to its best season since 2016 last year, narrowly missing out on a Big 12 Championship appearance with a 7-2 conference record.
However, 2025 will be a lot different than Sanders’ first two seasons without quarterback Shedeur Sanders and dual-threat superstar Travis Hunter.
The Buffs are a new and remodeled team this year, and that includes a lot of starting spots up for grabs, including at quarterback. Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter is the likeliest starter, but five-star recruit Julian Lewis has the talent to challenge for the top spot even in his true freshman season.
Former Colorado quarterback and current Fox Sports lead college football analyst Joel Klatt discussed the Buffs’ third season under Coach Prime and the expectations that come with losing several top players.
“I don’t see them taking a huge step back, maybe a small one,” Klatt said on The Herd with Colin Cowherd. “So two things. One, they’ve recruited at a very high level, and they’ve brought in a couple of quarterbacks, Kaidon Salter, a transfer from Liberty. And they also got Julian Lewis, who decommitted from USC.”
Klatt’s prediction that the Buffs won’t take a step back is a bold one, considering the loss of several star players and Colorado’s demanding schedule. However, Klatt credits Sanders with bringing in players who are ready to perform at the college level immediately.
“Deion has done a really great job, whether it’s been in the portal or in high school, recruiting to try to reload, they need to continue to get better at the line of scrimmage.”
Perhaps the most notable comment Klatt made was about the Big 12’s crowded middle class and lack of elite teams.
