Gehrig Heil commits to Longhorns
I would like to thank Coach Sharp, Coach Gafford, and all of the LA Tech staff for helping me out through my recruiting process and giving me an amazing opportunity to play at the next level. With that being said, after A LOT of thought and consideration, I have decided to flip… pic.twitter.com/p3Upoyk6T9

After the spring departure of Michael Kern, the Texas Longhorns have finally added some depth to their kicking game. On Monday, they flipped punter Gehrig Heil from the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs. Over the last few weeks, he has been a popular name for programs looking for kicking help.
The Phoenix native also received offers from Arizona Christina and Northern Arizona and preferred a walk-on offer from Georgia Tech. He visited Arizona State, Michigan, Texas A&M, and UNLV during the recruiting process. He will now get to call Texas home as he looks to help the Longhorns win a title.
Coming out of high school, Heil was ranked as a five-star prospect. Due to his play, he was the No. 45 kicker and the No. 16 punter in the 2025 recruiting class. He brings a lot of versatility as the talented punter also has kickoff and field-goal experience
Over the last few months, the Longhorns kicking game has undergone a lot of turnover. They added Jack Bouwmeester through the transfer portal. He only has one year remaining of eligibility, meaning that Heil could be the starter in the future. Even if he doesn’t start this year, he will get to learn from Bouwmeester.
With the regular season approaching, Heil will have to learn a new system quickly. The Longhorns open their season on August 30th against Ohio State in Columbus.
