Texas Tech football’s Behren Morton on spring practice, surgery rehab
Behren Morton, while recovering from shoulder surgery, says he’s nevertheless made good use of his time during Texas Tech football spring practice.
Summer conditioning is under way for the Texas Tech football team in conjunction with the start of the university’s first summer term last week. Before you know it, it’ll be time for preseason practice.
In between, Behren Morton has another football assignment on his schedule. The Red Raiders quarterback got an invitation announced this week to the Manning Passing Academy, the annual camp for high-school skill-position players at which top college quarterbacks serve as counselors.
This year’s camp is June 26 through July 29 at Nicholls State in Thibodaux, Louisiana, the site since 2005. Former NFL quarterback Archie Manning hosts the camp with his sons Cooper Manning and former NFL quarterbacks Peyton and Eli Manning. Archie Manning originated the academy in 1996 at Tulane and also has put it on at Southeastern Louisiana.
Last year’s camp featured 46 quarterbacks from the FBS, FCS and Division II ranks, including Frenship graduate Donovan Smith from Houston. In addition to Morton, Baylor’s Sawyer Robertson from Coronado also is on this year’s list of invitees.
Last year, former Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes was voted the greatest quarterback to ever attend the Manning Passing Academy in an unofficial fan poll run by the Houma Courier.
Morton completed 63.3% of his passes last year for career highs of 3,335 yards and 27 touchdowns. He finished eighth in the FBS in passing yards per game (277.9) and 16th in touchdown passes.
