STILLWATER — Over his time coordinating offenses in high school football, Taylor Stuart’s schemes remained fairly similar from year to year.
Read-option run game with the quarterback. Throw the ball every now and then.
But two years ago, Stuart handed the reins of his offense at Lawrence (Kansas) High School to a new starter, Banks Bowen, and Stuart suddenly felt the need for some Air Raid principles.
“With a guy like Banks, you’re able to adapt your offense to be a more pass-friendly team,” Stuart told The Oklahoman. “He created a lot of things for our receivers by putting the ball in the right spots, but the way he ran the ball, we had even more quarterback-run game in the mix, too.”
The result? Two seasons of production that totaled over 4,000 passing yards, nearly 1,900 rushing yards and 58 total touchdowns for Bowen, who led all Kansas Class 6A schools in total yards as a junior in the fall of 2023.
Bowen is among the 30-plus new Oklahoma State players, high school prospects and college transfers alike, who reported to campus this week. Bowen is set to step into the third-string role behind the two survivors of the spring quarterback competition, Zane Flores and Hauss Hejny.
Of course, Bowen’s journey to Stillwater was far from traditional.
The 6-foot-3, 208-pound Bowen developed into a three-star recruit running Stuart’s offense, ultimately signing with Tulsa last December and reporting to campus in January.
But just before the transfer portal closed in late April, he entered his name.
With Oklahoma State looking to fill a void in its quarterback room because of its own departures, Stillwater was an ideal destination for Bowen — thanks to a strong in-house connection.
