In a perfect world, Zage Gravitt graduated from Wichita Falls High School.
But at least he got to represent Old High one last time during the 88th Oil Bowl all-star football game June 7, and all former Coyotes should be proud of how Gravitt represented the defunct program’s proud legacy.
With the Coyote logo on his helmet, Gravitt threw five touchdown passes, leading the East to a 38-0 victory against the West at Memorial Stadium.
Gravitt was the final quarterback in Old High history, passing for 1,764 yards and 12 TDs as a junior during the 2023 season. WFHS closed its doors permanently in May 2024 with Wichita Falls ISD opening Legacy and Memorial high schools in Aug. 2024.
And while Gravitt finished high school at Breckenridge, enduring an 0-10 season, he still identifies himself as a Coyote.
“Once a Coyote, always a Coyote,” said Gravitt after completing 20 of 31 passes for 264 yards. “I love Old High. I wish I had graduated from Old High. I’ll always consider that my high school.”
Playing the Oil Bowl with the Coyote emblem on his helmet was the next best thing for Gravitt. Former Coyote player and coach John Eakin sent Gravitt the logo to stick on his helmet.
“Once I got accepted to play in this game, I knew I wanted to represent the Coyotes,” said Gravitt, whose father, Byron, was the Coyotes’ defensive coordinator for the program’s final few years. “I just feel comfortable on this field. This is my home.”
Gravitt’s senior year came full circle during the Oil Bowl with his top receivers all hailing from Holliday. Breckenridge’s season opened with a 64-0 victory to Holliday.
