When it comes to college football in the 21st century, few teams have been as good, or as fun as the Oregon Ducks. Thanks to the up-tempo spread offense introduced by Chip Kelly in Eugene, the Ducks were known for their speed and flash, scoring points in a hurry and captivating the college football world.
This flash put a lot of players in the limelight, creating offensive stars who became household names in a hurry. While it was quarterback Marcus Mariota who won the Heisman Trophy in 2014, his running mate, RB De’Anthony Thomas, recently earned the honor of being named among the most dynamic players of the century by CBS Sports.
“Thomas was a lightning bug for the Ducks and Oregon found so many creative ways to ensure he got his share of touches every Saturday,” CBS wrote. “He tallied 3,186 yards from scrimmage and 41 touchdowns over his three-year career, averaging 8.9 yards per touch on offense as a running back-slot hybrid of sorts. Equally explosive on special teams, Thomas returned four kickoffs and one punt for touchdowns as a menacing threat with track speed.”
Thomas went on to be drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL draft, and while his pro career may not have panned out quite as many expected, he will still go down as one of the most entertaining players to ever wear an Oregon uniform.
