Pac-12 sues Mountain West for $43M in ‘poaching’ penalties
The Pac-12 is suing the Mountain West over “poaching penalty” that would cost the rebuilding conference more than $40 million.

All eight members of the new Pac-12 have reportedly signed Grant of Rights and membership agreements.A media rights deal for the Pac-12 is expected to be announced soon, possibly within days.The deal could involve up to four different media partners, potentially including CBS, ESPN and The CW.
Multiple national reports say a prominent step in the rebuild of the Pac-12 will be announced soon.
Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports reported June 9 that all eight members of the new Pac-12 have signed their Grant of Rights and membership agreements. Dellenger says that signals a step toward finalizing the media rights package.
He says that media rights deal could be “in the coming days.” Dellenger reports that as many as four different partners could be part of the package.
The conference announced April 29 a deal for the 2025 college football season when Oregon State and Washington State are the only two members of the conference. That deal involves CBS, ESPN and The CW, and many expect that trio to be part of the new, long-term Pac-12 media rights deal.
John Canzano reports the Pac-12 leaders are meeting June 10. Chris Vannini of The Athletic also reports the Grant of Rights has been signed and a TV deal is expected to be announced “soon.”
There are currently eight schools that are part of the Pac-12 rebuild: Oregon State, Washington State, Colorado State, Boise State, San Diego State, Fresno State, Utah State and Gonzaga (non-football member).
The Pac-12 needs an eighth football member by July 1, 2026, and the expectation has been that an addition (or multiple additions) would come after the media rights deal was finalized.
