Two Clemson non-conference games rank in Greg McElroy’s Top 10 2025

Clemson football features prominently in ESPN analyst Greg McElroy’s early look at the top non-conference matchups for the 2025 season—claiming two of the top eight spots.

The Tigers’ annual rivalry game against South Carolina landed at No. 8 on McElroy’s list. While the Gamecocks may take a step back defensively, McElroy believes they could be much improved on offense. Still, he sees Clemson as a serious contender on the national stage.

“For those of you who have listened to this show the last couple months, I think Clemson has a legit chance to start the season in the Top 5,” McElroy said. “And I would not be surprised at all, if at season’s end they’re No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 in college football. I think they’re that good.”

He called the rivalry with South Carolina one of his personal favorites and pointed to the road atmosphere in Columbia as a real test for a Clemson team that he believes is built to compete for a national championship.

Even higher on McElroy’s list was Clemson’s season opener against LSU, which he ranked No. 2 overall among non-conference showdowns. The game will mark a rare Death Valley vs. Death Valley clash, and he expects it to set the tone for both teams’ seasons.

“They have the quarterback back, they got tremendous skill, the offensive line should be excellent,” McElroy said of the Tigers. “Defensively they have great players back at all three levels.”

He also praised LSU’s roster and offseason moves, especially the return of quarterback Garrett Nussmeier and key additions through the portal. McElroy sees it as a pivotal year for Brian Kelly’s program and wonders how well their defense, under second-year coordinator Blake Baker, will hold up against Cade Klubnik and Clemson’s explosive offense.
