Before LSU baseball’s win over Arkansas to open the 2025 College World Series, head coach Jay Johnson addressed rumors about one of his assistants taking another job.
Josh Jordan, the Tigers’ third base coach and recruiting coordinator, is reportedly being considered for Duke’s head coaching vacancy. Johnson spoke highly of Jordan’s work under him since they both arrived in Baton Rouge in 2022.
“He’s one of the best, if not the best assistant coach I’ve ever had,” Johnson said. “He’s certainly capable of being a head coach and running his own program.”
Prior to joining Johnson’s staff, Jordan served as an assistant at Duke since 2012. He climbed the ranks, starting as the recruiting coordinator then earning the title of associate head coach in 2015. The strong ties make him a prime candidate for the Blue Devils’ leader.
“Obviously, I want to keep him because he’s really good at what he does,” Johnson said. “He makes me a better head coach because how quality he does his work.”
Losing assistants isn’t new for Johnson as pitching coach Wes Johnson accepted the Georgia head coaching role during LSU’s 2023 national championship run. Johnson trusts his staff to stay focused on the goal while having those conversations.
“I have no questions about our staff and their ability to prepare with other things going on,” Johnson said. “I expect them to be able to execute what they need to do in that space and have our team ready to play.”
