Vanderbilt Football 2025 Position Preview: Quarterbacks

I suppose we should start talking about the 2025 Vanderbilt football team at some point.

Look, I’ve made my feelings as a lawyer abundantly clear about the Diego Pavia court ruling: as a lawyer, it offends me to make such bad law because of a rather unique fact situation that the NCAA in its infinite wisdom decided to turn into a broad ruling for at least the 2025 season. But as a Vanderbilt fan, well, it removes any questions we had about the quarterback room going into this season. So that’s good.

We’ll eventually come around to position groups where there are a lot of questions. And for 2026 and beyond, there are still questions here. But this is set in stone for this season.

The Starter

Diego Pavia, sixth-year senior: Around this time last year, a lot of people were questioning who Vanderbilt’s starting quarterback would be. I had no such questions. Vanderbilt very clearly did not bring in New Mexico State’s offensive coaching staff and its starting quarterback with no intention of starting him.

I don’t really need to rehash the accomplishments: 177-of-298 passing, 2293 yards, 20 touchdowns, 4 interceptions, plus 801 rushing yards and 8 touchdowns. For better or worse, Pavia was the Vanderbilt offense in 2024, and when he was gimpy after taking some dirty hits in the Kentucky game, the offense suffered. (He still beat Hugh Freeze while gimpy, however.)

Oh, yeah. And he beat Alabama. The guy is a Vanderbilt legend is the point, and it’s nice to go into a season not wondering who the starting quarterback will be.

The Backup Competition

Drew Dickey, redshirt junior: Of the two main competitors to be Pavia’s backup, Dickey is the program guy, who’s appeared in one game in three years on campus and hasn’t attempted a pass. In this day and age, guys like this usually transfer. My…
