Oklahoma Sooners have 3 of ESPN’s most unbreakable CFB records

The Oklahoma Sooners have had countless great players and a long list of incredible coaches throughout the program’s history. Those players and coaches have led the way for so many great games, teams, moments, championships and records that will never be toppled.

ESPN’s Chris Low decided to rank the top ten most unbreakable records in college football this week, and OU was extremely well represented on his list. The Sooners had three records in the top ten, including No. 1 overall.

That, of course, would be Oklahoma’s 47-game winning streak from 1953 to 1957 under legendary head coach Bud Wilkinson. The Sooners captured two national championships in this timeframe, giving Wilkinson and the program three in total.

When surveying the most dominant college football machines in history, the conversation begins and ends with the Bud Wilkinson-led Oklahoma teams of the 1950s. The Sooners bulldozed their way to 47 consecutive wins, a streak that began in 1953 and lasted most of five seasons, producing back-to-back national championships in 1955 and 1956. Oklahoma held its opponents to single digits in 35 of the 47 wins and recorded 22 shutouts. – Low, ESPN.

Coming in at No. 4 on Low’s list was Oklahoma’s 472.4 rushing yards per game in 1971. Serving under defensive-minded head coach Chuck Fairbanks, offensive coordinator Barry Switzer produced the most lethal rushing attack ever seen. With Switzer calling the plays, and the Sooners perfecting his Wishbone formation in Year 2 in the scheme, the OU offense was unstoppable.

If an offense is rushing for more than 250 yards per game today (there were four in 2024), that’s considered a punishing running attack.
