5-star S announces commitment between Oregon, Notre Dame

One of the top players in the 2026 recruiting class came off the board on Friday afternoon, with 5-star safety Joey O’Brien announcing his commitment between the Oregon Ducks and Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Unfortunately for Dan Lanning and his staff, the news didn’t come down as they were hoping.

O’Brien, the No. 30-rated player in the 2026 class and No. 4 safety, announced his commitment to Notre Dame on Friday afternoon, joining the Fighting Irish’s top-five ranked class in the 2026 cycle. This doesn’t come as a massive surprise, with O’Brien playing at La Salle High School in Pennsylvania, but the Ducks were in his recruitment down to the very end and made a strong push for him after his official visit to Eugene earlier this month.

While missing out on O’Brien is unfortunate for Oregon, Duck fans still have much to celebrate after landing 5-star safety Jett Washington on Thursday night. Washington, the nephew of the late Kobe Bryant, is rated as the No. 18 player in the 2026 class, and the No. 2 safety, standing at 6-foot-5, 200 pounds. Washington is also the highest-rated safety to ever commit to the Ducks.

Oregon currently has the No. 28 recruiting class in the 2026 cycle, but there is a belief that the ranking could quickly rise with the caliber of players set to come off the board soon. Next Tuesday, 5-star QB Ryder Lyons is set to announce his commitment between the Ducks and BYU Cougars, and there is a belief that 5-star OT Immanuel Iheanacho will announce his commitment soon as well, with Oregon the heavy favorite to land him.

On top of those two, the Ducks are also in an excellent place for 5-star LB Tyler Atkinson, as well as 4-star DB Davon Benjamin.
