5-star Richard Wesley chooses Texas, but Texas A&M isn’t slowing down

As the saying goes, “You can’t win them all.” Texas A&M missed out on five-star edge rusher Richard Wesley out of Los Angeles, California, who shut down his recruitment after an official visit to Texas.

If we’re being honest, the Aggies were never truly in the running for Wesley. He took 10 visits between Oregon and USC, with Texas A&M managing just a single unofficial visit back in January. Wesley had a viral moment jumping into a pool with Oregon head coach Dan Lanning after committing to the Ducks, only to decommit two weeks later, hilariously.

While a high-profile out-of-state recruit like Wesley choosing Coach Lanning wouldn’t exactly shake things up in Aggieland, it’s a different story when that level of talent commits to your in-state rival. That opens the door for serious social media banter and, more importantly, bragging rights in the recruiting rankings.

As it stands, Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko is on a recruiting heater, with the Aggies soaring to the No. 2 spot in the 2026 class rankings. Meanwhile, the Longhorns have entered the top 10 after two significant commitments.

With early signing day just over five months away, every recruiting win—or loss—carries added weight. While missing out on Wesley wasn’t a surprise, the momentum Elko is building in College Station is undeniable. The Lone Star rivalry is heating up, and both teams are racing toward December with something to prove.
