FSU QB Thomas Castellanos trash talks Alabama ahead of season opener

Is it talking season already? In the case of Florida State Seminoles quarterback Thomas Castellanos, it’s trash-talking season.

In an interview with On3 (subscription required) Monday, the Boston College transfer upped the ante a bit for his team’s season opener against Alabama by taking a shot at the Crimson Tide and coach Kalen DeBoer.

Namely, Castellanos said that Alabama doesn’t have former coach Nick Saban around to “save them” from a player (Castellanos) who left his former team before the 2024 regular season had even ended after being benched.

Castellanos told On3’s Pete Nakos:

“I’m excited, man. People, I don’t know if they know, but you go back and watch every first game that I played in, we always start fast. I dreamed of moments like this. I dreamed of playing against Alabama. They don’t have Nick Saban to save them. I just don’t see them stopping me.”

Alabama won’t need Saban to “save” them from Castellanos. At least not if 2024 is any indication.

Virginia coach Tony Elliott and Virginia Tech coach Brent Pry were two such coaches who fielded teams that were capable of stopping Castellanos last year.

Castellanos was 4-4 as Boston College’s starting QB under Bill O’Brien before being replaced by backup Grayson James on Nov. 9. Castellanos left the team five days later on Nov. 14. He completed 99-of-161 passes for 1,366 yards and 18 touchdowns to five interceptions, and rushed for 194 yards on 93 carries.

Alabama hasn’t lost a season opener since 2001 when the Crimson Tide began the Dennis Franchione era with a 20-17 home loss to UCLA.

Alabama last faced Florida State in the 2017 season opener at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The Crimson Tide defeated the Seminoles, 24-7, at the beginning of Jimbo Fisher’s last season at FSU.
