Rutgers football has had four decommitments in the past two weeks from their 2026 recruiting class.
The first of which is high three star linebacker Adam Shaw. Shaw is a quarterback who is expected to transition to linebacker once he graduates from high school. Shaw initially committed to the Scarlet Knights after the official visit weekend on May 30th. His decommitment came 10 days later on June 11. Six days later, he commits to Michigan State after an official visit. Shaw’s family has a legacy with the Spartans, as both of his parents were athletes for the school.
The next decommitment came from high three star linebacker, Justin Edwards, as he actually flipped his commitment to Miami. He took his official visit to Rutgers on June 6th and committed to the Knights on the 8th. The coaching staff tried to get him to cancel all of his visits, as they often do with commits; however, Edwards still decided to take an official visit to Miami, which ultimately flipped his commitment.
The most recent decommitments are two high three stars in Safety Rihyeal Kelley and Offensive Tackle Tyrell Simpson, who both decommitted on June 23. Kelley flipped to Alabama, and Simpson flipped to Virginia Tech. Rutgers struggled to compete for Kelley, who was offered by Alabama after he had already committed to the Knights. In Simpson’s case, Rutgers could not convince him to cancel his official visit to the Hokies, which ultimately led to his decommitment.
The one recurring issue among these decommitments was Rutgers’ inability to get recruits to shut down their recruitment entirely. Head coach Greg Schiano often makes it a point to recruits that they are expected to shut down their official visits to prove they are all in. Not all recruits agree to that, which is why Rutgers can sometimes have decommitments like these.
