Virginia Tech football recruiting: Hokies flip offensive tackle from Big Ten

The Virginia Tech Hokies and head football coach Brent Pry scored a big win Monday, landing the commitment of offensive tackle Tyrell Simpson. Not only does it keep the Hokies hot on the recruiting trail, but Tech had to work a little harder on this one.

The 6-foot-7, 310-pound Simpson was committed to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights of the Big Ten. A native of Leland, North Carolina, Simpson maintained a close bond with new VT offensive line coach Matt Moore from when he was the OL coach at West Virginia.

Simpson committed to the Scarlet Knights on May 31. Virginia Tech flipping a commitment from a Big Ten school is a big deal in this day and age. Simpson has the size to play immediately once he arrives in 2026. He will also remain at offensive tackle, much like Buddy Wegdam, who committed to the Hokies last week. That gives Tech’s 2026 class two legit offensive tackle prospects. High school tackles often move inside to guard at the next level. That shouldn’t be the case for Simpson or Wegdam.

The Hokies aren’t done either. VT hosted perhaps its top two offensive line targets on official visits over the weekend: OT Thomas Wilder (Virginia Beach) and OG Adrian Hamilton (Washington, D.C.). Not only do the Hokies hope to land both players, but they are high on VT’s board. Wilder will also remain at offensive tackle once he arrives in college. He is also a four-star recruit and a consensus top 10 player in the state.

Rutgers wasn’t the school that wanted to sign Simpson. The Kentucky Wildcats of the SEC worked hard to bring Simpson in, but his bond with Moore won out. A good day for the Hokies.

Welcome home, Tyrell.
