FAMU football’s ‘atmosphere, energy’ on display at James Colzie camp

The James Colzie III Prospect Camp did what it intended.

On Tuesday, June 24, the Florida A&M head football coach hosted his second annual on-campus camp, which attracted hundreds of high school players to Ken Riley Field at Bragg Memorial Stadium.

Prospects from high schools all over Florida attended Tuesday’s camp at FAMU. Even California, Texas, and Wisconsin-based players were at Colzie’s camp.

“It’s about the university ― the brand. The FAMU brand is national,” a proud Colzie told the Tallahassee Democrat.

“We’re getting it all over the country.”

Colzie has emphasized having a healthy balance of high school players and NCAA Transfer Portal entrants joining his 2025 FAMU football team this offseason.

In May, Colzie and his coaching staff spent the month on recruiting trips to scout high school players in Florida and surrounding states.

Hosting a prospect camp helps Colzie’s goal of having a fair contingency of players fresh out of high school.

“The way the recruiting landscape is going right now, you can get your team good via the portal,” Colzie said. “But I think having a foundation with some high school kids is important. We started that this year. We’ve got to be great high school recruiters and with the portal.”

Florida High wide receiver Keenen Jeune left FAMU football’s James Colzie III Prospect Camp with a scholarship offer to join the Rattlers.

Jeune couldn’t compete in the prospect camp due to a hamstring injury, but the FAMU staff determined they’d seen enough from the 6-foot-1 rising senior.

Jeune had 24 receptions for 356 yards for the 8-4 Seminoles last season.

“I like the camp, the atmosphere, and the energy around campus,” Jeune said before getting offered. “There were some dogs out here, and I like the coaching staff. Everything about it is just high energy…
