Four-Star defensive lineman reveals when he will announce his commitment
With the recruiting season in full swing, the Longhorns are still in the mix for various prospects. That includes defensive lineman James Johnson, the No. 1 defensive lineman in the 2026 class. The four-star prospect has set his commitment date for June 28th. He will choose between Texas, Florida, Georgia, and Miami.
This past weekend, Johnson was initially supposed to be in Syracuse but chose to visit the Longhorns instead. That was an encouraging turn of events for Texas, who got to have the last word before Johnson began thinking through all of his options. He has two SEC powerhouses, Georgia and Texas, battling for his services.
Whoever lands Johnson will get a special player. In his last high school season, the Miami native recorded 60 tackles, including 29 for a loss. He also added five sacks and five QB hurries to his resume. Regardless of the opponent, Johnson made life difficult for quarterbacks.
While Georgia is seen as the favorite, Texas has been building an impressive 2026 class. So far, they have secured commitments from Vodney Cleveland, Dylan Baryon, and Corey Wells. Adding Johnson to that group would give them one of the best classes in the nation. Johnson’s visit to Texas appeared to be a success, as he was very active on social media during his time in Austin.
Although anticipation is building for what Johnson will accomplish, he still has one season of high school football left. That will give him more to develop before becoming a star in the college ranks. Texas hopes that when that time comes, Johnson will be wearing a Longhorns uniform.
Over the next few days, Longhorns fans will be watching closely as Johnson’s commitment inches closer.
