Ranking all 12 opposing quarterbacks on Alabama football schedule

Which opposing quarterbacks stand to give Alabama football the most trouble this fall? Thanks to a slightly different Alabama schedule and a handful of transfers, only four on this year’s UA schedule faced the Crimson Tide a year ago, so there are new faces to learn. Ranked best to worst, here are the starting quarterbacks, or in some cases, projected starters, on the Alabama schedule:

1. Garrett Nussmeier, LSU

After a 4,000-yard season in which he led the SEC in completions (337) and attempts (525), the Tigers veteran is back for his final collegiate campaign. He’s a confident gunslinger prone to the occasional bad decision; his 12 interceptions last year led the league, as well.

2. LaNorris Sellers, South Carolina

What might the 2024 SEC Freshman of the Year have in store for an encore? Pass protection, seemingly a perpetual sore spot for the Gamecocks, once again needs improvement. But Sellers caught fire over the second half of last season and is primed to break into star status this fall.

3. Diego Pavia, Vanderbilt

On top of being a proficient, if not spectacular, passer and a major threat as a runner, Pavia also brings a fearless, hard-nosed attitude that sets a tone for the Commodores offense. He takes care of the ball, too. There’s nothing not to like, except perhaps the supporting cast.

4. John Mateer, Oklahoma

In Mateer, OU gets an upgrade here from Jackson Arnold. Can it get a matching upgrade up front to protect him? That’ll be critical. But the former Washington State QB posted a 29-7 TD-INT ratio for the Cougars last year, and there’s a legitimate expectation the Sooners offense will find more pay dirt with him at the…
