New Pac-12 invites Texas State to become 8th member for football

Ever since USC and UCLA originally announced their intention to leave the Pac-12 back in the summer of 2022, the future of the conference has seemingly been on life support. This week, however, the conference finally got some good news regarding its viability as an FBS league. On Friday, the Pac-12 extended a formal invitation to Texas State to join the league. With the Bobcats expected to accept the invitation, the league would indeed hit the eight-member threshold necessary in order to ensure its survival as a conference. College Sports Wire has more:

“Over the last few weeks, reports have indicated that the Pac-12 adding Texas State, currently a member of the Sun Belt, is imminent. While nothing between the two parties has been formalized yet, that could be set to change early next week. As was first reported by the Austin Sports Journal, the Bobcats have now received a formal invitation to join the Pac-12. A Board of Regents meeting has been called for Monday to vote on accepting the invitation, which it is widely expected to do.”

Texas State would join Oregon State, Washington State, Boise State, Fresno State, San Diego State, Utah State and Colorado State as part of the new Pac-12 football universe in 2026. It’s a far cry from what the Pac-12 used to be, but it’s better than not existing at all or having OSU and WSU become a “2-Pac” with no real conference structure.
