Jake Retzlaff exit would impact Big 12, Colorado-BYU clash

Some big news surfaced Sunday evening centered around one of the Big 12 conference’s expected top contenders, the BYU Cougars.

The Cougars’ starting quarterback, Jake Retzlaff, could be on the move shortly before the start of the 2025 football season. The news stems from a Salt Lake City Tribune report that Retzlaff is anticipating a seven-game suspension for violating the school’s honor code after a civil lawsuit filed in May accused Retzlaff of sexual assault in November 2023.

The hefty suspension the experienced quarterback would face if he were to stay at BYU has prompted Retzlaff to look for other opportunities.

According to a Tribune source, the quarterback has told coaches and teammates that “he is likely to leave the program.” ESPN’s Pete Thamel followed up on that report with one of his own, stating that Retzlaff “plans to transfer.”

Retzlaff became BYU’s starter last season and was a primary reason the Cougars went 11-2 overall, including an Alamo Bowl victory over the Colorado Buffaloes. He threw for 2,947 yards and 20 touchdowns while also running for 417 yards and six scores.

The potential absence of Retzlaff, one of the Big 12’s better quarterbacks, would undoubtedly reshape the conference landscape heading into the 2025 season.

Colorado hosts BYU on Sept. 27 for a Week 5 matchup in Boulder that now comes with a significant question mark regarding their projected starting quarterback.
