Auburn’s loaded defensive backfield just got better with the addition of safety Jacoby Mathews.
The news cycle in July rarely consists of transfer portal movement. However, Auburn is experiencing one of the few exceptions.
Tuesday, former Texas A&M safety Jacoby Mathews announced his commitment to Auburn from the transfer portal. On Wednesday, the Tigers’ athletic program confirmed the move with a social media post.
Mathews’ move to Auburn comes after spending the last academic year in junior college. He visited the Plains during the weekend of June 16-18 and decided to commit two weeks later. In an interview with Auburn Undercover, Mathews says that he feels he can easily get back into playing shape at Auburn.
“I chose the Tigers because it was a no-brainer as to catching up to the speed of football again, but also already being familiar with the staff and the defense,” Mathews said. “So that lead me to be 100 percent certain in my decision.”
His transfer to Auburn also reunites him with his former defensive coordinator at Texas A&M, DJ Durkin. In two years under Durkin’s watch, Mathews started 12 games between the 2022 and 2023 seasons, making 66 tackles with an interception and seven pass deflections. He lived up to his potential in College Station after signing with the Aggies as the No. 8 safety from the 2022 signing class, and the No. 4 prospect from Louisiana. As a four-star safety, he chose Texas A&M over in-state program LSU.
Mathews will bring experience to a talented but young defensive backfield. Mathews joins Kaleb Harris and Sylvester Smith as the Tigers’ last line of defense, and is the second notable transfer to enter the position group, joining Georgia Tech transfer Taye Seymore.
