Rutgers Football Lands 12th in Phil Steele Preseason Big Ten Football Rankings

College football analyst Phil Steele released his annual rankings of college football teams and where they stack up against other teams in their conference. He had Rutgers listed as the No.12 team in the Big Ten.

In his quick breakdown of Rutgers’ goals for this season, Steele stressed the need to get back to another bowl game for the third year in a row to continue to establish a consistent winning culture.

“The Rutgers Scarlet Knights are hoping that head coach Greg Schiano can continue to find more consistent success. That doesn’t necessarily mean winning the Big Ten. It does mean being more competitive and going to a bowl game annually. After two straight 7-6 seasons, Rutgers has found some of that consistency.”

He also pointed out how hard this will be to achieve compared to last season because Rutgers now has to play powerhouses like Oregon, Ohio State, and Penn State.

Two things stick out about his analysis of Rutgers. The first one is that he has them above six Big Ten teams, which, compared to where they were just three years ago, is a pleasant sight to see.

The second thing that sticks out is at the end of his assessment, where he says, “So, it won’t be easy, but Schiano has proven to be successful with Rutgers before.” This makes it sound like he believes that with one or two more years of consistent winning, Rutgers will have a breakout year, or at least start to break out even more.
