5-star safety Jireh Edwards picks Alabama over Georgia

Five-star safety Jireh Edwards has decided on his commitment. The No. 23 prospect and No. 2 safety in the nation will be playing for the Alabama Crimson Tide. He chose Alabama over Auburn and Georgia.

Edwards is a five-star safety from the class of 2026. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound safety plays high school football for St. Frances Academy in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.

He was a part of the Under Armour All-American team in high school, where he totaled three tackles and played with Georgia freshmen Elijah Griffin and Juan Gaston, along with playing beside Georgia commit Zech Fort. In 247Sports’ scouting report on Jireh Edwards, they aptly gave him a comparison to Baltimore Ravens first-round pick Malaki Starks.

Unfortunately, Edwards chose Alabama over Georgia, marking the third high profile recruit to choose Alabama over Georgia in the past three weeks. Four-star running back Ezavier Crowell committed to Alabama a few days after Georgia landed four-star Jae Lamar, while five-star wide receiver Cederian Morgan also chose the Crimson Tide over Georgia on July 2.

If Edwards committed to Georgia, then he would’ve been the crown jewel of the defensive back room from the class of 2026. Regardless, Donte Williams has done a tremendous job as the defensive back recruiter.

Georgia has earned commitments from four-star cornerbacks Justice Fitzpatrick (No. 8 among cornerbacks, according to 247Sports), Caden Harris (No. 9) and Chace Calicut (No. 15), along with four-star safeties Jordan Smith (No. 6 among safeties), Zech Fort (No. 13), and Kealan Jones (No. 42).

As a result, Donte Williams is still 247Sports’ top recruiting position coach in the nation this year.
