Texas Tech football quarterback Will Hammond describes his background
Freshman QB Will Hammond will make his first career college start when Texas Tech football plays Arkansas on Dec. 27 at the Liberty Bowl in Memphis
Each of the Texas Tech football team’s first two Big 12 Conference games this season will come on the road against teams working on transfer quarterbacks after having disappointing 2024 campaigns.
The first of these comes with a trip to Salt Lake City to take on Utah. The following week sees the Red Raiders heading to Houston to take on the Cougars. Second-year head coach Willie Fritz did not have the best of times in Year 1, though the hope is that was just the start to bigger things in Houston.
What should the Red Raiders expect from their road trip against the Cougars on Oct. 4?
Get to know Texas Tech football’s opponent: Houston Cougars
Houston went 4-8 last season, losing the final three games. The Cougars played the role of spoiler several times last season, earning wins at TCU and home against Kansas State, games that kept the Horned Frogs and Wildcats out of the Big 12 title game.
Zion Chriss spent the latter half of the season as the team’s starting quarterback after Donovan Smith, a former Red Raider, was benched. Houston also brought in Texas A&M transfer Conner Weigman, who also lost his starting job last season in College Station. The safe bet is Weigman starts the season as QB1 for the Cougars, though Chriss could find his way onto the field as well after rushing for 388 yards.
The Cougars return each of their top four rushers from last season, Chriss included. Re’Shawn Sanford ran for 44 yards, Stacy Sneed 308 and J’Marion Burnette 182. They also bring back two of their top three receivers in Stephon Johnson (32 catches, 402 yards) and Makhi Mews (29 catches, 253 yards).
