Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark supports the “5+11” College Football Playoff model, which includes five automatic bids and 11 at-large bids.The Big 12 eliminated its preseason coaches’ poll, citing its potential to disadvantage teams like Arizona State.

The 2025 college football season is off and rolling. The Big 12 football media days — held at The Star in Frisco, Texas — marked the unofficial start of the new year as the conference was the first to host its annual event featuring players and coaches ahead of the season. 

Here are four things you need to know.

1. Big 12 commissioner goes all in on 5+11 model for College Football Playoff 

Brett Yormark, the Big 12 commissioner, came out swinging in his opening remarks, saying he believes the proposed “5+11” model for the CFP is “what’s right” for college football. The proposal would grant five automatic bids to conference champions, with 11 at-large bids. 

This is a clear rebuke of the “4+4+2+2” model favored by the Big Ten and SEC.

2. Yormark expects multiple playoff bids

As well as “doubling down” on the 5+11 model, Yormark took a bold stance in his confidence in the conference’s quality.

“Once again, I believe the Big 12 will be the deepest football conference in America,” Yormark said. “No league offers the competitive balance that we do. I fully expect the Big 12 to earn multiple College Football Playoff bids this year and to show once again that we can compete with anyone.”
