Michigan State football 2025 schedule
The Michigan State football team opens the 2025 season at home on Saturday, Aug. 30, against Western Michigan.
In seven weeks – less than 50 days away – Michigan State football kicks off Jonathan Smith’s second season at Spartan Stadium.
But before we get to that Friday night game on Aug. 30 against Western Michigan, a deeper understanding of where the Spartans are will have to wait at least until camp begins early next month. The revolving door of roster moves and the recent eschewing of open spring games render any analysis in the summer nothing more than speculation and guesswork for MSU – and every other team across the country.
A few things, though, are certain. Aidan Chiles, barring injury, will be back for his second year as the starting quarterback. Wide receiver Nick Marsh is expected to be his top playmaker. Smith’s offseason roster makeover means MSU will have a much different look, with many new faces, in its quest for its first bowl since 2021.
But many questions remain unanswered ahead of Big Ten media days on July 22-24 in, of all places, Las Vegas. Which is a great place to begin this list of five key things MSU fans want to know before things get started.
1. Will the Spartans make a bowl?
Coming off a 5-7 season in Smith’s debut, BetMGM set MSU’s over/under win total at 5.5. There also isn’t a single Spartan in the top 100 of EA Sports’ newly released college football game, far from a barometer of anything meaningful and somehow an even worse measure than recruiting website star rankings.
