Five-star recruit wears Oregon gear as decision nears

St. Paul’s Episcopal (Alabama) five-star defensive end Anthony “Tank” Jones is one of the most athletic recruits anywhere in the country.

As a junior, the 6-foot-4, 240-pound edge-rusher recorded 84 tackles, 18 tackles-for-loss and 16 sacks on the gridiron, and won the 6A state title in the discus.

Jones is rated the nation’s No. 16 overall prospect and No. 3 edge-rusher in the class of 2016 and is down to a final three of Alabama, Oregon and Texas A&M.

So far, he’s kept his leanings close to the vest, but has heavily implied a commitment date is imminent.

And Oregon fans may like what they’ve seen in recent days given that “Tank” felt like a near-lock to Alabama last month.

First, the Crimson Tide jumped from a non-finalist to the sudden favorite for Duncanville (Texas)  edge-rusher KJ Ford, who announces his commitment Friday.

Could it be a sign Kalen DeBoer’s program was forced to pivot after learning they had missed elsewhere?

It’s certainly not a crazy theory, although it’s hardly rock-solid. evidence.

On Thursday at a football event, Ford was spotted wearing Oregon cleats and later gloves as well.

Neither of those bits of evidence is anywhere near enough to feel comfortable about “Jones to Oregon,” but if one is trying to connect the dots to get to that result the past week has been a positive one for Ducks fans.

Alabama looms large, and Texas A&M regularly pulls off surprises, so nothing is close to being over.

But the latest developments are worth monitoring.

And a decision could come soon.
