Colorado Buffaloes football coach Deion Sanders’ absence on the recruiting trail this offseason reportedly had little effect on prospects’ interest in committing to CU one way or another.
That’s the reporting USA Today’s Brent Schrotenboer is presenting, anyway.
Schrotenboer shared that no recruit the coaching staff spoke to admitted that Sanders’ absence affected their decision.
“USA TODAY Sports discussed this with recruits who said they were told that Sanders was out sick when they visited. None said Sanders’ absence played a role in their decisions,” Schrotenboer wrote.
“Despite his absence, Colorado has been on a roll lately with three new commitments from recruits since July 10, including four-star linebacker Rodney Colton Jr. from Georgia. In Colton’s case, it didn’t matter if Sanders wasn’t on campus when he visited Boulder in June. Sanders talked to him by phone instead.”
Sanders’ absence didn’t affect these particular recruits’ way of thinking. It likely affected the thinking of the recruits who didn’t entertain the Buffs to begin with, knowing they wouldn’t get the same attention from their head coach in Boulder as they would in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Athens, Georgia, or Columbus, Ohio.
When discussing Coach Prime, there tends to be a lack of nuance. Sanders is often painted as either a game-changing genius or as an industry plant who’s in over his head.
In this case, claiming that the recruits the Buffs program courted were okay with the one-of-a-kind methods Sanders used doesn’t tell the full story.
