New coach Reggie Barlow filled roster after 46 transfers

New Tennessee State football coach Reggie Barlow has high expectations

New Tennessee State football coach Reggie Barlow hopes to continue the momentum the Tigers gained in 2024

TSU football experienced a significant roster turnover with 46 players leaving after the 2024 season.Reggie Barlow and his staff recruited 25 transfer players, many expected to start, to rebuild the team.

Reggie Barlow had a big task when he took over as coach of the Tennessee State football program, not only in trying to build off last season’s success but in finding enough players to do it.

The team was rocked with departures after Eddie George resigned to become the coach at Bowling Green. Barlow was hired in March, leaving his new staff with little time to fill the roster.

“We had to hit the ground running in terms of trying to recruit guys back from the transfer portal,” Barlow said during Big South/OVC media day July 17. “Also, trying to recruit other guys to fill roster spots was a priority and I commend our coaches for jumping on and being able to do that.”

TSU football had 46 transfers from 2024 FCS playoff team

TSU went 9-4 and earned an FCS playoff berth last season.

Some of the team’s best players, who had the opportunity to return, chose to leave. That included receivers Karate Brenson and Roshawn Lacy; running backs Jaden McGill and Jordan Gant; offensive linemen Conner Meadows, Blake Gamez and Saidou Ba; defensive linemen Eriq George (Eddie’s son) and Tyler Moore; linebacker Sanders Ellis; and defensive backs Boogie Trotter, Dion Villiers and Spencer Roof.

There could have been more departures, Barlow said, if he and his staff had not been able to convince some players to reconsider transferring even after they entered the portal.
